FAQ
Yes, all of the metals that touch skin are hypoallergenic! Please be mindful however, that “hypoallergenic“ simply means that the metal is less likely to cause an allergy. If you find that you are having a reaction to your Studio Avana earrings, please contact me and I'd be happy to brainstorm a solution!

Most Studio Avana metal is left raw and untreated, so it will oxidize naturally into a tarnish or patina over time. (Some pieces carry a protective sealant that slows this, see our Care Guide for specifics.) Tarnished brass can be beautiful in its own right, but if you'd rather keep that bright, freshly-polished shine, storage and care make the biggest difference.Store your piece in the baggie it arrived with, away from humidity, when you're not wearing it. For full cleaning instructions by piece type, see our Care Guide.
It depends on a few factors.BRASS BASICS. Brass is composed of copper and zinc. When copper oxidizes, it produces a green patina, the same effect you've likely seen on old pennies. This process is slow on its own, but it can speed up when it interacts with your unique body chemistry.YOUR SKIN PH. People with more acidic skin are more likely to notice this. The acidity in sweat reacts with the copper and releases copper chloride, which produces green discoloration on the skin. This isn't toxic or dangerous. A little soap and water washes it right off.TYPE OF JEWELRY. Pieces most likely to cause this are ones that sit close against the skin for extended periods, like rings or stud earrings. Dangling earrings, bangles, and cuffs are much less likely, since they're not in constant, close contact with skin.PREVENTION. The easiest way to prevent green skin is to keep pieces clean and avoid wearing skin-contact pieces while sweating heavily. Beginning in 2026, our brass rings and ear cuffs are finished with a protective sealant, which also acts as a barrier here. For stud earrings or older, unsealed pieces, you can create a similar barrier yourself: apply a light coat of clear nail polish or a protectant wax like Renaissance Wax to the areas that touch skin.If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at info@studioavana.com.
What metals do you use?My fiber settings and metalwork are handcrafted primarily in brass and sterling silver. Brass grounds the fiber work rather than overshadowing it, and using brass lets the value of a piece sit where it matters most, in the hours of hand-stitching and fabrication, not the metal itself. I also work in sterling silver, for those drawn to a cooler, brighter tone; like brass, it carries that same grounded, natural character. My ear wires are 14k Gold-filled or Sterling Silver wire; stud earring posts are always Sterling Silver. For necklace chains, I use PVD gold-plated stainless steel, chosen for its resistance to scratching, tarnish, and everyday wear, a durability that surpasses even 14k gold-filled. Unlike traditional gold plating, a thin layer of gold applied to a base metal's surface, PVD (physical vapor deposition) bonds gold at a molecular level onto a stainless steel base, creating a finish built to last.Updated 7/26/26.
