care guide
Each Studio Avana piece is handworked in fiber and metal, made to be worn and to last.
Storage and general care are consistent across the collection. Cleaning varies by piece; instructions for each are below.
For detailed information about metal oxidation/tarnish/patina please see FAQ.
CARE TIPS
STORAGE. Each piece arrives with a small protective baggie. Store it there between wears, away from humidity, to guard against scratches, snagging, and tarnish.
BEAUTY FIRST. Apply your makeup, perfume, hair products (hairspray, etc) before putting on your jewelry.
CLEAN HANDS. Skin care lotions, oils, sweat, etc. could stain the fibers and encourage metal tarnishing.
WATER. A bit of water will not harm your fiber/metal piece, but please remove your jewelry before swimming or showering.
CLEANING
For detailed information about metal oxidation/tarnish/patina please see FAQ.
Certain pieces are finished with a protective, nontoxic sealant that helps guard against tarnishing. Find your piece below to see which cleaning method applies:

FIBER CLEANING
Fiber pieces can be very gently cleaned with a q-tip and mild dish soap. Dab lightly but DO NOT RUB, since the friction could cause threads to fray. Allow pieces to air-dry completely before storing.
METAL CLEANING
14K GOLD-FILLED & STAINLESS STEEL PIECES: Clean with mild soap and water only.
SEALED BRASS PIECES: Clean with mild soap and water only, using a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Do not use jewelry polishing cloths or any abrasive cleaners since these can wear through or dull the sealant finish over time.
UNSEALED BRASS & STERLING SILVER PIECES: Here are several options...
-
OPTION 1: Silver/Brass Polishing Cloth. These cloths are 100% cotton flannel, impregnated with cleaning and polishing agents formulated for brass or silver. The safest method for pieces that hold fiber designs. Still be careful to avoid contact with fibers.
-
OPTION 2: 1 tbsp Lemon Juice + 4 tbsp Baking Soda. Mix to create paste. Gently massage the brass with the paste, rinse and dry thoroughly. (If your brass has a directional satin finish, be sure to scrub your piece in the direction of the finish.)
-
OPTION 3: Brasso Brass Cleaner. Follow instructions on bottle. Please use in a well ventilated area.
-
OUR FAVORITE OPTION for metal only pieces: Use Steel Wool Grade-00. Tear off a small piece of steel wool, add water and a small amount of household soap. Gently buff your pieces until you reveal a beautiful, bright golden finish. Rinse and dry thoroughly. (If your brass has a directional satin finish, be sure to buff your piece in the direction of the finish.)
